Alberta "Bert" M. (Farland) Doane

January 21, 1924 ~ October 16, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Alberta M. “Bert” (Farland) Doane, 92, of Newton died on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at the Newton Health Care Center.  A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2016, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.  The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.  Memorials to the Community Heights Alliance Church for Mission Work or the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Bert, the daughter of Harold S. and Hazel M. (Horn) Farland, was born on January 21, 1924 in rural Killduff, Iowa.  She was a 1942 graduate of Newton High School and a lifelong resident of Jasper County.  Bert was united in marriage with Gerald M. “Gar” Doane on November 15, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri.  She and Gar enjoyed golfing before Bert dedicated her time to raising her two children, Marty and Lea Ann.  In addition to being a homemaker, Bert also owned the “Little Cellar” Antique Shop out of her home for many years.  She enjoyed antiquing and picking up treasurers for her customers. 

Bert was a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church, where she actively supported mission work and was faithful to visiting those in nursing homes weekly for over 40 years.  She also was known for her warm hospitality to all and her love of decorating for the holidays. Bert was an excellent cook and had a cookbook published for her children and grandchildren. 

Those left to honor Bert’s memory are her children, Marty (Cheri) Doane of Pella and Lea Ann (Kevin) Duncan of Allison; four grandchildren, Emily Kainz of Des Moines, Andy (Jana) Heiting-Doane of Des Moines, Andrea Dickman of Allison, and David Lloyd of Allison; four great-grandchildren, Dominick Kainz, Olivia Kainz, Martin Heiting-Doane, and Ellen Heiting-Doane; her sister, Marjorie Kilburn of West Union; brother, James (Edna Mae) Farland of Newton; sisters-in-law, Billie Jean Farland of Newton and Donna Farland of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Robert “Skip” Thorson of Newton; many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Pastor Ed Lord.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gar in 2010; four brothers, Wayne, Delbert, Clifford, and Ronn Farland; three sisters, LaVonne Thorson, Jean Dillin, and Marilyn Greene; and a grandson-in-law, Emery Dickman.
