George H Umbarger

January 25, 1930 ~ August 17, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

George H. Umbarger, 87, of Newton died on Thursday, August 17, 2017, at Nelson Manor in Newton.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 23, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.  The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, at the funeral home.  Memorials to the Nelson Manor Activity Fund or the Jasper County Animal Rescue League may be left at the funeral home. 

George, the son of Oscar and Gladys (Petted) Umbarger, was born on January 25, 1930 in Newton.  He grew up in Newton and then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War stationed in Colorado and Alaska.  George was united in marriage with Carol “Coke” Dickerson on July 23, 1954 in Newton.  George worked in the rubber department at the Maytag Company for 40.1 years, retiring in 1989.  He was a member of the VFW Post 1655 and a lifetime member of the UAW Local 997 and the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.  George enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair and at Diamond Lake.  The last few years he has also liked spending time feeding and watching his squirrels. 

George is survived by his son, Rick (Brenda) Umbarger of Newton; daughter, Jane (Jeff) McDermott of Newton; son-in-law, Wayne (Kim) McCoy of Des Moines; grandchildren, Nicole McCoy, Nathan (Stacey) McCoy, Sean (Rachel) McDermott, Patrick (Mari) McDermott, Ben (Cari) McDermott, Colton Umbarger (Kory McCurdy), and Grant McCoy (Krissy Rounds); his great-grandchildren, Carter, Trent, Lainey, McKynna, Kinser, Carlee, Sofia, Ethan, Landon, Ruby, Rowyn, and Timmy; his siblings, Jack (Pat) Umbarger of Kansas City, Missouri and Colleen Wyatt of Gainesville, Florida; and his many nieces and nephews and special friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol “Coke” Umbarger in 2015; daughter, Judy McCoy; twin-sister, Patsy Jess; and a brother, Billy Umbarger and a sister, Darlene Umbarger, both in childhood.
