L. John Erickson

John's memorial service will be at 10 a.m., July 3rd at the First Presbyterian Church, 220 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home, please add, Attn: Erickson Family on the envelope.

Born on June 10, 1929, John grew up on a farm in Boone and graduated from Drake University.  After serving in the Army at Ft. Belvoir near Washington, DC, he began a 39 year career with the Maytag Company.  He managed Maytag’s branch offices in New Orleans and Cleveland before moving back to Newton where he served as Director of Field Education until his retirement.  John married LaVonne Peterson in 1952 and they celebrated 62 wonderful years together before LaVonne’s passing in 2014.   John enjoyed being a member of Rotary International, playing golf and was a life-long Iowa Hawkeyes fan.  He loved spending time with his three sons:  Rob, who resides in Denver, Colorado; Mark (Nancy) who lives in Milton, Georgia and Chris (Connie) who lives in Peoria, Arizona.  He was especially proud of his six grandchildren:  Tom, JD, Chelsea, Peter, Sara and Emma.
