Visitation: The family will greet friends from 5-8 P.M., Monday, July 20, 2009 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, Iowa. The family will also greet friends at the church an hour prior to the funeral service.
Funeral Service: 1 P.M., Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at the First Presbyterain Church in Newton, Iowa.
Interment: Immediately following the funeral service on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Newton Union Cemetery.

Betty Louise Shankland, age 87, of Waverly and formerly of Newton, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Waverly Health Center. Betty was born on March 9, 1922, in Chariton, Iowa, the daughter of Guilford Williby. She was raised by her grandmother Regina Kumm and graduated from the Chariton High School in 1940. On February 16, 1943 Betty was united in marriage to Robert C. Shankland in Princeton, Missouri. During her life she worked as a bank teller for Bank of America in San Francisco, California, as a secretary for the doctors’ office of Norris, Forsythe, and Conkling in Newton, Iowa for 14 years and as a secretary for the law firm Hammer, Matthias, Tyler, and Levin in Newton for 16 years. Betty retired in the late 1980’s and then moved to Waverly in 1993 to be closer to her daughter. Betty’s enjoyments included Wartburg basketball and football, the Green Bay Packers, baking, and needlework. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton where she served as Deacon, Wartburg Booster Club, and the Jasper County Care Review Board. Betty was also active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Betty’s memory is honored by her daughter, Susan K. Shankland of Waverly; her sister-in-law, Majorie (Derwin) Elliott of Cedar Rapids; and her aunt, Leona Kumm of Indianola. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her step-mother, Otha Williby; her grandparents; a half-brother, Raymond Williby; and her uncle, John Kumm.
