Lois Jane (Egland) Oelke
February 05, 1944 - August 07, 2009
Newton, Iowa

Memorial Service: 11 A.M., Monday, August 10, 2009 at the funeral home. The family will greet friends with lunch following the service.
Lois, the daughter of Hurvey Hegge and Jane Thankful Clawson Egland, was born February 5, 1944, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She graduated from Truman University in Kirksville, Missouri with a B.S. in Business Economics and Business Education. Prior to this, she graduated from Indian Hills Junior College with an A.A. degree. She also attended Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota.

Lois was confirmed in her faith in her home church, The Evangelical Free Church in Houston, Minnesota and was later immersed in baptism in the First Baptist Church, Norway, Michigan by her husband, Pastor Douglas Oelke. Her cousin, Rev. Merlin Egland, and Lois were prophesized to be class “Guiding Lights” in their year book and were recognized at a recent 45th class reunion for their decades of service to their Lord.

Lois was a secretary at Maytag Corp. in Newton, Bassett Research in Cooperstown, New York, and a teacher at Colfax-Mingo H.S. in Iowa, and in Job Corp. in New York. In the church, she served as District Moderator, Music Director, and Director of Christian Education to name a few of her positions. Along with her husband, she served nine congregations during forty plus years of Christian service. Lois was a friend and a counselor to people. Even when she was hospitalized in her final illness, she led people to Christian commitment. Life long friends came to see Lois in her final days. Lois asked daily “Have I completed my service to Christ,” which was the focus of her entire life from childhood.

Lois’ greatest joy was her family. Doug and Lois were married June 9, 1962, and were blessed with four children-Amy (Richard) Mally of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Roxanne ( Rev. Dr. Robert Schlatter) of Sullivan, Indiana, Sarah (Andrew McGill) of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Mark (Cherilynn Lundberg) of Rush City, Minnesota. They were also blessed with ten grand children- Anna, Joe, and Rachel Mally, Nicholas, Christopher, and Allison Schlatter, Zachary, Jacob, and Megan McGill, and Abby Lynn Oelke. During their marriage, the Oelkes took into their home scores of people in crisis.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, First Baptist Church or Our Savior Lutheran Church may be left at the funeral home.
