Memorial Service: 11 a.m., Monday, November 23, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, 210 N. 2nd Ave. E. in Newton.
Visitation: The family will greet friends immediately following the service with a lunch on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton.
Interment: A private family burial will be held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa.

Those left to honor Dick's memory are his wife, Marjorie formerly of Newton, now of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; son, Dennis (Cecille) Thompson of Johnston, Iowa; daughter, Susan (Bob) Curry of Mitchellville, Iowa; his three grandchildren, Jennifer (Patrick) Meyer, Megan, and Nathan Curry; great-grandson, Caleb Meyer; and his two sisters, Jean (Dwight) Kennedy, and JoEllen (Harold) Adams all of Prairie City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy A. and Grace (Clippinger) Thompson; great-grandson, Gabriel Meyer; brother, Robert Thompson; and sister, Jane Lenning.

Dick attended country school through the eighth grade, and then graduated from Prairie City High School in 1951. He joined the U. S. Army in 1952, serving in Korean War. After he returned from the service in 1955, Dick joined the Maytag Company in Newton, Iowa. He held several positions within the company in both Newton and Cleveland, Tennessee and retired in 1993 as a systems analyst, after 38 years of service.

Dick was active in both community and church activities. He served as President of the Lions Club in Prairie City, was a member of the Jasper County Historical Museum Fund Drive, an was a member and President of the Prairie City School Board. He was also an active member of the Maytag Management Club. Dick served in various capacities in the three churches of which he was a member: the Prairie City Church of the Brethren, First United Methodist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, and the First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Dick was an accomplished woodworker donating many of his items to charitable fundraisers. He used these talents in working with Habitat for Humanity. Dick also loved to play golf. He was also devoted to his family, supporting both his children and grandchildren in their many activities.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS THE FAMILY REQUESTS MEMORIALS TO Hospice of Jasper County or to the First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the funeral home.
