Glenn Dale Dannen was born September 7, 1923 in his parents’ rural Melbourne, Iowa home. Glenn was a graduate of Newton High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Glenn married the love of his life, Mary Ann Meacham in 1960 in the Rising Sun Church of Christ. Glenn deeply loved his children and their families, and all of us call him our dad: Andy & Terry Dannen, Susan & Mark Hoffert, and Judy & Eric Balbiani. Glenn was lovingly called “Grandpa D.” by Amy & Steve Wadstrom, Ryan Dannen, Sabrina & Scott Smead, Samantha Hoffert, and Tyler, Brandon & Jordon Balbiani. Glenn was blessed to have Bennett, Taryn, and Josie Wadstrom, as well as Karter and Gavin Smead as his great-grandchildren. Glenn was also survived by his sister, Maxine Averhoff and her family, and his brother, Leonard Dannen.

Glenn traveled a bit when he was younger, but he always believed that his home was the greatest place on earth. He was a lifelong farmer, and he was a good steward of their farmland. He worked hard every day providing for his family. When he began farming, he tilled the soil with a team of horses and progressed through the years. Glenn was also an amazing inventor, and he spent many hours out by his shop creating and repairing farm machinery for himself and his neighbors. He enjoyed talking politics with those who would listen, and a few who didn’t care to. Glenn was an outstanding woodworker, building most of the cabinetry in their rural Newton home. In the wintertime, he spent many hours reading books on American history, listening to public radio, and planning his next year’s crops.

Glenn was greeted in Heaven July 1, 2010, by his mother and father, Henry and Augusta Dannen, his older brother who died as a toddler, and his brother-in-law, Hans Averhoff.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
