| Those left to honor Gar's memory include his wife, Bert of Newton; son, Marty (Cheri) Doane of Pella; daughter, Lea Ann (Kevin) Duncan of Charles City; 4 grandchildren: Emily (Dan) Kainz of Des Moines, Andy (Jana) Heiting-Doane of Des Moines, Andrea (Emery) Dickman of Allison, and David Lloyd of Charles City; 3 great-grandchildren: Dominick Kainz, Olivia Kainz, and Martin Heiting-Doane; and his brother, Sam Doane of Davenport. | |
| He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur B. and Hazel (Breese) Doane; his sister, Mildred; and brothers, Roy and Don. | |
| Gar graduated from Kellogg High School in 1942. He worked for the Maytag Company for 42 years, retiring as a Supervisor in 1985. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an active member of Community Heights Alliance Church, the Last Man’s Club, and American Legion Post 111. He was also a member of the Maytag Management Club and had been in charge of the Primetime Group at Community Heights Alliance Church.

| He had a strong creative ability. He was very inventive and could work with a variety of materials to come up with solutions.
