David B. Hill

David’s funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, September 27th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. A memorial service will be held in Des Moines at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Friday, September 27th at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery Veteran’s Section in Newton.

David B. Hill, the son of Alton and M. Ruth Gates Hill, was born on September 4, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended country school in Jasper County and was a graduate of Newton High School in 1966. David served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he received two purple heart medals, a Presidential Unit Citation and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

On November 23, 1980 David was united in marriage with Eileen L. Cole in the Chapel at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. They were blessed with two daughters, Carrie and Debbie. David retired from Environmental Management Services at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines after 30 years. Since his retirement David has volunteered at the VA Medical Center for 20+ years. He was a past member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Des Moines where he had served as an Elder. He currently was going to the Christ The King Catholic Church in Des Moines. He was a member and Past Master of Auburn-Union Park Lodge No. 592 A.F. & A.M. in Des Moines, member and Past Master of Newton Lodge No. 59 A.F. & A.M. Member of Newton Chapter No. 100 OES. Member of Gebal Chapter No. 12, Royal Arch Masons, Malachi Council No. 55, Royal and Select Masters and Oriental Commandery No. 22 Knight Templar. Za-Ga-Zig, Shrine. 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a recipient of KCCH (Knight Commander Court of Honor and National Sojourners. David belonged to the Military Order of Purple Heart honor state Commander. He was a past chapter commander of the Marine Corps League, 3rd Marine Division, VFW and DAV.

David loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved his work and volunteering at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.

David died on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines. He was 72. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Hill and Ruth Hill Appleby; stepfather, Delmar Appleby.

Those left to honor David’s memory are his wife, Eileen of Des Moines; daughters, Carrie Hill of Des Moines and Debbie Hill of Des Moines; his five grandchildren, Noah Stanton, Georgia Hill, Paige Hill, Ariana Floyd and Easton Nittler; and sister, Susan (Tom) Anderson of Newton.
