A funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 27, 2018, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 26, 2018, at the funeral home. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church, the Killduff United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, or the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.
Dorothy, the daughter of John and Tillie (Cary) Van Gilst, was born March 19, 1920 in rural Killduff. She grew up in Killduff and graduated from Sully High School in 1937. She was united in marriage with Harold E. Davis on June 2, 1950 in Clarion, Iowa. The couple made their home in Newton. Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where she taught the 3-year-old Sunday school class for several years. She was a member of the Chat-a-Bit Club and had also served as a 4-H leader for many years. She and Harold loved to travel together and had been to many countries over the years.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Davis and T. Gerald Oydgard of Amana, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 2001; and her brother, Clair Van Gilst.
