Gladys Eileen (Wilcox) Ely

Gladys’ Graveside Service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 20, 2018, at the Wittemberg Cemetery, 6028 E. 8th St. N. in rural Newton. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery.

Gladys Eileen Wilcox Ely, the daughter of Vernon George and Margarett LaVina Valentine Wilcox was born on November 1, 1924 in Newton, Iowa. She attended Newton Schools.

On April 25, 1942, Gladys was united in marriage with William Lee “Bill” Ely in Unionville, Misssouri. They were blessed with two children, Robert Lee “Butch” and Charlotte Eileen “Sherry”. Gladys devoted her life to her husband, family and friends. She enjoyed reading, crafts and putting jig saw puzzles together.

Gladys died on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at the home of her niece, LaVina Daily in Newton. She was 93. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, “Bill” in June of 2002; daughter, “Sherry” Ely Benco in December of 2002; three brothers, Elmer Eugene Wilcox, George Vernon Wilcox, Jr., Robert Dean Wilcox; and two sisters Margarett Alberta Wilcox Holmes and Pearlie MyrtleAnn Wilcox Miller.

Those left to cherish Gladys’ memory are her son, Robert L. “Butch” (Marylyn) Ely of La Palma, California; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and her many nieces, nephews and friends.
