Kenneth W. Husted, 95, of Newton died on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Newton Healthcare Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 8, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Memorials to the Salvation Army or Iowa River Hospice may be left at the funeral home.
Kenneth, the son of Elwin and Lily Maude (Mongan) Husted, was born on February 19, 1922 in Madison County, Iowa. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1940. Kenneth served his country from 1944-1946 during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a motor machinist stationed on the U.S.S. Skagit. On June 22, 1947, Kenneth was united in marriage with Faune A. Maxwell in Martensdale, Iowa. Kenneth farmed south of Indianola and also worked at his parent’s restaurant, Millie’s Drive In, in Des Moines. The family then moved to the Ankeny area and Kenneth worked and later retired as an instrument technician in the maintenance shop at the Firestone Tire Company. Following retirement, Kenneth built a home by hand on Lake Ponderosa in rural Montezuma where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Later they moved to Newton. Kenneth was very mechanically minded and a talented carpenter. He enjoyed farming and fishing and faithfully supported missions work.
Those left to honor Kenneth’s memory are his son, Ron (Pam) Husted of Newton; four grandchildren, Heidi Benton of Des Moines, Brian Husted of Des Moines, Michael Husted of Newton, and Katy (Tom) DuVall of Newton; nine great-grandchildren, Christina, Jessica, Melody, Madeline, Hannah, Brenna, Lillian, Charlie, and William; and three great-great grandchildren, Kaiden, Addie, and Eva. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Mildred Husted; wife, Faune A. Husted in 2009; two brothers, Norman and Richard Husted; sister, Thelma Smith; and step-brother, Gary Conner.
