Peggy L. Gardner, 84, of Newton died on Monday, May 8, 2017, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 13, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends following the service with a lunch at the funeral home. Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League may be left at the funeral home.
Peggy, the daughter of Nelson and Esther (Hanna) Hindman, was born on December 8, 1932 in Brush, Colorado. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, Iowa, graduating from Newton High School in 1952.
Peggy was united in marriage with Dale W. Gardner on February 21, 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. She was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife, helping with a dairy herd and raising the couples four children. Later, Peggy worked for Capstone for 20 years as a substance abuse counselor, retiring in 1993. She enjoyed helping people. Peggy loved being with her family, having lunch with friends and family, going to Iowa Hawkeye events, and spending time enjoying her flowers and gardening. Peggy and Dale also liked vacationing in Arizona and Mexico with their family. Peggy was a devoted to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was a person who was always very kind to others and never critical.
Those left to honor Peggy’s memory are her husband, Dale; daughter, Rhonda (Randy) Bauer; sons, Steve (Tina), Doug (Rose), and Mark (Patti) Gardner; five grandchildren, Jennifer Gardner, Jonathan (Amy) Gardner, Tim Gardner, Hope Bauer, and Heather Mueller; several great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Coco, who Peggy walked every day at Maytag Park. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marjorie Hindman and Maxine Swanger; and three brothers, Jack, Jerry, and Clair Hindman.
