Russell Preston Obituary

Russell “Russ” W. Preston, 80, of Newton; formerly of Melbourne died on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Mercy One Newton Medical Center.  A celebration of life will be held from 4-6 p.m., Monday, February 18, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.  The celebration will begin with a time of sharing memories.  Memorials in Russell’s name to help local veterans (checks made out to Shawn Preston) may be left at the funeral home.

Russ, the son of Leslie and Lillie (Bailey) Preston, was born on February 22, 1938 in Van Cleave.  He grew up in Melbourne and graduated from Melbourne High School.   After graduation, Russ served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1961.  On June 15, 1961, Russ was united in marriage with Laura L. Van Horn in Estherville. They made their home in Melbourne. Russ worked and later retired from Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, where he was a Foreman and Supervisor. Russ enjoyed exploring for old Indian artifacts and arrowheads.  In his explorations he has also collected many unique rocks.  Russ liked woodworking and mowing his yard which he would often do every other day.  Two years ago, Russ moved to Newton and was residing at Newton Village.  His famous candy and snack bins inside his front door will be missed by many of his caretakers and other visitors.

Russ is survived by his son, Shawn (Beth) Preston of Newton; grandchildren, Heather Preston, Zac Miller, and Ben (Hannah) Miller; and his great-grandchildren, Kinser and Gracelyn Miller.   He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura in 2014; brother, Cecil Preston; and sister, Norma Muller.
