Sherry Hughes Obituary

Sherry Kay Hughes, 61, of Newton died on Monday, July 16, 2018, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.  A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorials to Sherry's family which will be used for educational needs in Newton may be left at the church during the service or the funeral home.

Sherry, the daughter of Richard and Kathy (Oswalt) Goodman, was born on November 13, 1956 in Newton.  She lived most of her life in Newton, attending Newton Community Schools. In 1976, Sherry met Robert  Hughes and they have spent their lives together ever since.   For the last 12 years, Sherry has worked as a Para Pro for the Newton Community Schools. Prior to that she worked at Wal-Mart. Sherry and Robert also provided respite care for a local family.  Sherry had taken college classes in DMACC through the years, many of which had to do with her love for reading and writing.  She also used that love to be a BETA reader for professional novelists.  Sherry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, flower and vegetable gardening, Irish music, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Robert Hughes of Newton; children, Rob (Christie) Hughes of Newton, Doug (Tammy) Walls of Des Moines, and Nicki (Jake) Mathes of Melcher-Dallas; her grandchildren, Joey Hughes (Natalie Cosey), Bethannie Hughes (Drew Phillips), and Kaytlynn Hughes, Makari, Ahlia, and Uriah Walls, and Lexi and Arend Mathes; 5 great-grandchildren; her brother, Gary (Tanya) Goodman of Ames; her uncle, Bob Halferty and his family; brother-in-law, Joseph Hughes of Taos, New Mexico; sister-in-law, Ruth Bourgeois of Taos, New Mexico; and special friends, Marcia Kearney and Chuck and Alanna Wilson. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Goodman; mother, Kathy Freeman; a sister in infancy; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robert and Helen Hughes.
