Thomas A. Couper, 70, of Newton died on Monday, July 29, 2019, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown. A visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, August 11, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League may be left at the funeral home.
Thomas, the son of James Parish and Diana Louise (Jones) Couper, was born on July 23, 1949 in Newton. He lived most of his life in Newton and attended Newton Schools. Thomas served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968-1970. On December 23, 1992, Thomas was united in marriage with Shirley Stevenson Catlett in Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked at the Maytag Company in Newton for 28 years, retiring in 2006.
Thomas was a member of the Newton VFW Post 1655 and the UAW Local 997. He loved fishing and had favorite fishing locations at Lake Red Rock and in Canada.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Shirley Couper of Newton; children, Tammy (Jerry) Van Baale of Grinnell; step-children, Alaric (Michell) Catlett, Daryl (Amy) Catlett, and Angeleque Scull, all of Newton; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Couper of Newton and Mary “Beth” Couper of Florida; and his honorary daughter, Julie (Randy) McConnell of Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Randy Couper.
