Vicki’s life was too brief for certain, but her legacy will leave a mark on all those privileged to meet her. She will be remembered for her selflessness. Anyone who met Vicki did not remain a stranger for long for she had a genuine warmth and charm. Vicki could light up a room with her beautiful smile.

Vicki’s story began on August 16, 1966 where she was the oldest child born in Unionville, Missouri to Dean & Connie Bland, growing up in Newton, Iowa.

Vicki’s childhood instilled in her values she carried throughout her adult life. She learned to cherish her family during frequent trips to visit her grandparents. Vicki learned the value of hard work from being a member of 4-H and band. She worked through High School with babysitting and detassling being her first jobs. She was a 1985 graduate of Newton High School.

Vicki married James Brant in 1985 and they were blessed with two sons, Josh and Justin. The couple later divorced. In 1997, Vicki married Billy Douglas and they were blessed with a son, Jacob. The couple later divorced. All remained lifelong friends and co-parented together.

Vicki married Mark Shafer on June 13, 2015. She was a long time manager of Casey’s and Kum & Go where she was loved by customers and employees alike. She loved the people and her job as the Administrative Assistant at the US Federal Probation Office. She truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: shopping, chatting with friends and family, charities, NASCAR, Pittsburgh Steelers and spending time with her precious grandkids who lovingly called her Gram Gram.

Vicki is survived by her husband: Mark; three sons: Josh (Angela) Brant, Justin Brant, and Jacob Douglas; three grandchildren: Christian Davis, Kali Brant, and Levi Brant; her parents: Dean and Connie Bland; sister: Cheryl (Bill) Hansen; brother: Rick (Rhonda) Bland; brothers-in-law: Mike (Tess) Shafer and Doug (Jane) Shafer; sisters-in-law: JoAnn Routh and Diane (Trevor) Pemberton; and many nieces and nephews.

Vicki Sue Shafer of Carlisle, Iowa went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 5,2018. She was 52. Vicki was proceded in death by her grandparents Milar & Opal Bland, Olen & Margaret Brown, great grandparents Robert & Faye Kelley and a brother-in-law Patrick Shafer.

If Vicki had any final wishes, she would ask each of you to spend time with your children, play with your grandchildren, and make a toast to lifelong friendships.

Vicki was loved and admired by all. She will be deeply missed. We will always keep her memory in our hearts.

The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Iowa Hospital, floor 7RCS for their attentiveness and loving care.  In addition, a special thanks for the loving care that her sister Cheryl, and sister-in-law Rhonda provided during her long journey fighting MDS cancer.
