Andrew "Andy" Malsom Obituary

Andrew “Andy” Joseph Malsom, 57, of Newton died on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the First Baptist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.  The family requests people wear a Hawaiian shirt in Andy’s honor to visitation. Memorials to the Newton Community Theater may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.

Andy, the son of Casper “Cap” and June (Kiehn) Malsom, was born on July 17, 1968, in Huron, South Dakota.  He grew up in Ipswich, South Dakota and graduated from high school there in 1986.  Andy then received his degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Growing up and during college, Andy was a member of many choirs and singing groups, even performing at Carnegie Hall. While in college Andy met Linda Rames and they were later married on November 13, 1992, in Aberdeen. In 1995, they would move to Newton, Iowa for a work opportunity for Andy.  In 2000, he began his 26-year career as a service technician with Black Hills Energy and as a member of IBEW.  For several years, the Malsoms' also owned Tropical Sno in Newton.

Andy could never sit still and could never say no to helping others.  For many years, Andy and Linda were members of the First United Methodist Church, where Andy was a part of many mission trips.  For the last 13 years, they have been active members at First Baptist Church; where Andy has enjoyed singing on the Praise Team, serving on the Stewardship and Diaconate Boards,  and cooking for men’s breakfasts.  He also was a vital part of the Newton Community Theater not only taking part on stage in many productions but also doing various behind the scenes tasks.   While his children were growing up, Andy took an active role in helping with Boy Scouts.

Andy is survived by his wife, Linda Malsom of Newton; children, Joseph “Joe” Malsom, active-duty Navy in Goose Creek, South Carolina and Sarah Malsom (Alex Burkett) of Newton; and his mother, June Malsom of Ipswich, South Dakota.  He was preceded in death by his father, Casper “Cap” Malsom and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
