Barbara Ann De Meyer or “Grandma B.” as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren passed from this life on Sunday, November 19.
Barb was born to Tom and Marietta Fairfield on February 18, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa. After completing her radiology training at Xavier, she made the move to Newton, Iowa to accept a job in radiology at SKIFF Medical Center. It was during her time at SKIFF that Barb met the friends that became her family. Barb took pride in her job at SKIFF and remained there until her retirement. Barb was a crafter and a consummate baker. Her love language was food and she firmly believed that there were not too many things a homemade sweet treat or hearty meal would not cure. Afterall, a chocolate chip cookie has “some butter and that’s dairy, chocolate is a good antioxidant and the eggs add protein.” She delighted in trading culinary secrets and finding new ways to spice up old favorites.
Barb was preceded in death by her son Jon. Left to honor Barb’s memory are her son Phil (Cindi) De Meyer; three grandchildren Jack, Bryan and Madelline; sister Sharon (Paul) Stephany; brother Tom (Darcey) Fairfield; her nephews, Chris and Shawn as well as a host of friends that held a very special place in her heart.
Family will be greeting friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. A private burial will be held at Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider celebrating Barb’s life by sharing a good meal with your family and friends. Memorials may be directed to DMACC Culinary Institute, Iowa Public Television or AHeinz57 Pet Rescue.
