Barbara Jacqueline (Goben) McDermott, 89, of Newton died on Friday, August 14, 2020, at Park Centre.  A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 24, at Newton Union Cemetery.  You are welcome to bring a lawn chair if you want to sit during the service. Barbara, the daughter of Aulden and Irene (Kent) Goben, was born on June 12, 1931 in Lucas, Iowa. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1949.  On May 22, 1954, Barbara was united in marriage with Joe A. McDermott in Newton. She worked at the United Telephone Company and Cozad Cleaners prior to having her children, Jaci and Joe.  Barbara then loved her time at home as a wife and mom.  She and Joe were wonderful dancers and their love story actually began after meeting at a dance in Marshalltown. Through the years they enjoyed going to all of their kids and grandkids activities.

Barbara is survived by her children, Jaci McDermott (Kath Streb) of Ankeny and Joe (Kathy) McDermott of Newton; special niece, Rose (Steve) Murphy of Newton; grandchildren, Matt (Alicia) Murphy, Grant McDermott (Tammy Brain), Reid McDermott (Carly Dahlem), and Brooks McDermott; her great-grandchildren, Jael and Annabelle Lee Murphy and Declan Joseph Lee McDermott. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe in 2018; and her aunts and uncles.
