Benny Spears Obituary

Benny Eugene Spears, 78, of Newton died on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown. A celebration of Benny’s life will be held from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the American Legion Post 111 in Newton.   Memorials to the American Legion Post 111 or the Izaak Walton League.

Benny, the son of Daniel and Frances (Tisue) Spears, was born on January 19, 1948, in Albia. He grew up in Lovilla and graduated from Albia High School.  Benny then served his country in the U.S. Navy. After being discharged, Benny moved to Monroe and began working at the Maytag Company, first in the factory and later as a semi driver.  On August 17, 1979, Benny was united in marriage with Annette McCombs in Monroe.  They would make their home a couple years later in Newton.  In 2000, Benny retired from Maytag but continued to work holding jobs at Realm and with the railroad. 

Benny was a member of the American Legion Post 111, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, and the Elks Lodge. Benny loved to spend time in his garage, tinkering, “organizing”, and eating peanuts. He also liked to do yardwork. Benny enjoyed having beverages with friends and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Benny is survived by his wife, Annette Spears of Newton; daughters, Tracy (Jeremy) Malcom of Queen Creek, Arizona and Kymber Anderson of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Sabrina Malcom and Jacob Anderson; and his sister, Connie (Mike) Haluska of Decorah.   He is preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Samuel Malcom; and two brothers, Kenneth Spears and Dennis Spears.
