Bernard Lear, 59, of Newton died on Friday, June 5, 2020, at his home. A celebration of Bernard’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials to Bernard’s family may be left at the funeral home.
Bernard, the son of Wayne and Gladys (Schulz) Lear, was born on September 27, 1960 in Grundy Center. As a child his family moved to Newton where he would mostly live for the rest of his life. Bernard was united in marriage with Linda Lust on January 30, 1987. Together they were members of the ASHA, American Saddlebred Horse Association and ran a horse stable North of Newton for many years. They also were 15-time Grand Champions at the Iowa State Fair. Bernard was also a go-er and liked to stay active. He was never one to sit still. Through the years he did a variety of jobs including working for the railroad, roofing, and driving semi-truck. Around Newton, many knew him from his time working at Clark’s Gas Station.
Bernard is survived by his three children, Tim Barwegen of Grinnell, Lacy Lear (Chad Emary) of Newton, and Levi Lear (Tori Kinsella) of Des Moines; Lacy and Levi’s mom, Linda Lust Lear of Colfax; his grandchildren, T.J. Barwegen, Kirsten Noga, Jewel Noga, Julian Noga, Vincent Lear, LeeAnn Lear, Anastasia Lear, Kayla Hitze, Hailey Emary, and Hannah Emary; siblings, Lavern, Janice, Nancy, Karen, LaVonne, and Joyce; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister, Ruth.
