Betty Coulthard Obituary

Betty Jane Coulthard, 85, of Kellogg died on Friday, March 24, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, March 30, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service and again after the service with a supper at the funeral home.  Memorials in Betty’s name (checks made payable to Fay Coulthard) may be left at the funeral home.

Betty, the daughter of Otto and Mildred (Shelton) Markmann, was born on August 15, 1937 in Newton. As a child her family lived in many places around Iowa before living for a time in Peterson, where Betty would graduate from high school in 1955. She then attended A.I.B and received a clerical certificate.  Betty was united in marriage with Almer H. Coulthard on July 3, 1958, in Newton.  They made their home in Newton and later in rural Kellogg. Betty worked in the office at the Maytag Company until staying home to raise their two daughters, Fay and Connie.

Betty was a devoted volunteer with the Laurel American Legion Auxiliary Post 635, serving as President and Secretary for many years each. She also volunteered during Christmas time at the Marshalltown Veteran’s  Home. Betty was a member of the Zoar Church, now Cornerstone Fellowship.  Betty enjoyed horses and going to horse shows her entire life and was a proud member of the Iowa Horse Show Association and the Siera Horse Club of Ottumwa.  Her favorite past time was spending time with her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Fay Coulthard of Kellogg and Connie (Brian) Miller of Searsboro; granddaughters, Katie Miller (Jorden Etter) of Newton, Jennifer (Nick) McNaul of Laurel, and Tabitha (Joe) Sprunger of Winterset; her sister, Karen (Gerald) VandeKamp of Kellogg; and her many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Almer Coulthard; and a son, Otto in infancy.
