Betty S. Schafer, 95, of Newton died on Friday, March 19, 2021, at Park Centre. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, at the funeral home. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice or the First United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home.
Betty, the daughter of Manford and Margaret (Huff) Hicks, was born on August 2, 1925 in Nevada, Missouri. She graduated from Monroe High School in Monroe, Iowa in the class of 1942. On December 14, 1944, Betty was united in marriage with William M. “Bill” Schafer in Newton. They made their home in Newton the following year. Betty worked in the factory at the Maytag Company for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Betty enjoyed baking cakes, puzzles, word finds, and writing letters. She also liked going for rides and loved to eat pie, especially chocolate mousse.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Janet Porter of Baxter; granddaughters, Chris (Brad) Maras of North Liberty, Jodi (Dusty) Albertson of Newton, and Tami (Rob) Sundquist of Lewisville, Texas; grandsons, Jay Dee (Tracy) Porter of Colo, Troy Engle of Newton, and Kevin (Jennifer) Schafer of Newton; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 2002; daughter, Kathryn Engle; son, Kenneth Schafer; two brothers; two sisters; and a sister in infancy.
