Billy Lee Stewart, 72, of Newton died on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at his home. A private family graveside and military service will be held at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials to the American Legion Post 111 Honor Account may be left at the funeral home or mailed to Mark Butler, 932 E 10th St S, Newton, IA 50208.
Billy, the son of Thomas and Geraldine (Woods) Stewart, was born on July 2, 1948 in Creston. At a young age, his family moved to Newton. Billy graduated from Newton High School in 1966. He then attended New Mexico State on a golf scholarship until he was drafted. Billy served his county in the U.S. Army during Vietnam from July of 1969 until July of 1971. After the service he returned to Clovis, New Mexico where he would live until 1987. Billy then moved back to Newton and worked at the Maytag Company for 22 years, retiring in 2012. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111. Billy loved golfing, playing cards, watching sports, and being a Hawkeye fan.
Billy is survived by his siblings, Gary (Kay) Stewart of Jacksonville, Florida, Larry (Peney) Stewart of Newton, Marilyn Butler of Newton, Charles “Chuck” (Sherry) Stewart of Altoona, and Mary Lou (Tony) DeNato of Marshalltown; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Earl Butler.
