Bryon Irving Smith, beloved brother, father, papa, and friend passed away on September 29, 2026, at the age of 70. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday. The family requests that you wear clothes to support your favorite sport’s team as you know Bryon would be supporting the Packers, Hawkeyes, or Cubs. Memorials in Bryon’s name (checks made payable to Mike Smith) may be left at the funeral home.
Bryon, the son of Stanley and Barbara (Maxwell) Smith was born in Des Moines on September 19, 1956. He grew up in Colfax and graduated from Colfax High School. Bryon then went on to work and later retire from the Maytag Company in Newton.
Bryon was united in marriage to the love of his life, Diana Williams on April 26, 1975. They happily spent nearly 50 years of marriage together. In 1980, they moved into their forever home in Colfax where Bryon and his dad would build the entire kitchen, garage, and deck; all while raising two children and working long shifts at Maytag. Bryon was always building or fixing something; he was the one to call if you needed help with any DIY projects. He was a jack of all trades and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Bryon enjoyed many hobbies including camping, fishing, mushroom hunting, deer hunting, gambling, and playing cards and pool. He loved spending time with his family and sharing in the many moments and family traditions that brought them together; including annual pumpkin carving, picking out a Christmas tree, making Christmas cookies, and camping in Pella during Tulip Time; just to name a few.
Those left to honor his memory include his brother, Kim Smith; brothers-in law, Darrell (Jani) Williams and Danny (Marla) Williams; children, Melissa Porter and Mike (Missy) Smith; grandchildren, Brooke (Gabe) Stackhouse, Cameron Porter, Baylee Porter, Kali Smith, Cole Smith; one great granddaughter, Annette Stackhouse; and an aunt, Nancy (Ron) Bruxvoort.
Bryon was lovingly welcomed into Heaven by his dear wife, Diana, his sister, Catherine (Smith) Davis, and his parents, Stan and Barb.
