Carroll DePenning Obituary

Carroll A. DePenning, 78, of Newton, died Thursday, July 2, 2026, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the Newton Church of the Way.  The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m., Monday, July 13, 2026, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Please dress in casual clothing or wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the MercyOne Newton ER Capital Campaign; the ABC of Iowa Apprenticeship & Training Trust, to be used specifically for electrical apprenticeship programs; or the Newton Church of the Way Building Fund can be left at the funeral home or at the church on the day of the service.

Carroll, the son of Herman and Lucille (Van Wyk) DePenning, was born November 28, 1947, in Oskaloosa. He was a graduate of Lynnville-Sully High School.  Carroll was united in marriage with Nancy Kay Van Der Kamp on June 25, 1965.  Carroll had two sons, Todd and Corey.  Carroll was active in the boys' hobbies and athletics.

Carroll worked in the electrical trade for 58 years and was a Master Electrician.  For the last 15 years of his career, he co-owned DPAI Electric with his wife, Nancy.  Carroll was a member of ABC of Iowa, serving on the Executive Committee, including Board President in 2000. Carroll was an active member of the association, volunteering his time on the ABC of Iowa Education Committee (would later become the Apprenticeship Committee), the ABC of Iowa Electrical Trade Council (ETC), the ETC Trade Show Committee. Carroll highly valued the apprenticeship training program.  He was willing to assist with program needs, including volunteering his time for the ABC of Iowa Craft Championships for several years.

Carroll was a faithful member of Newton Church of the Way.  He had also served on the Building Trades board for the City of Newton.

Carroll was a classic car enthusiast, bringing cars to Good Guys on several occasions. Although snowmobiling was among his favorite hobbies, he wasn’t one to turn down a ride on anything with a motor, whether it be a dirtbike, motorcycle, or side-by-side. Carroll was also famous for his homemade margaritas. In 2025, he and Nancy gifted the family a trip to Hawaii, bringing together their children and grandchildren to celebrate their 60th anniversary; that vacation was a special blessing to them.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Nancy of Newton; two sons, Todd and Tami DePenning of Bedias, Texas and Corey and Amy DePenning of Urbandale; 4 grandchildren: Jacob Schmidt and Claire Schmidt of Navasota, Texas and Brady DePenning and Darby DePenning of Urbandale; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Ralph and Dorothy Van Der Kamp; a grandson, Cooper Lane DePenning, in infancy; his two brothers, Larry DePenning and Howard DePenning; and his brother-in-law, Darrel Van Der Kamp.
