Charlotte Auten Obituary

Charlotte Helen Auten, 99, of Newton, died on January 13, 2020 at Nelson Manor.   No services are scheduled at this time. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the cremation.  Memorials to Newton Christian Church or Hospice of the Midwest may be left at the funeral home.  

Charlotte, the daughter of LeRoy and Ella (Davis) Brain was born September 18, 1920 at her parent’s home in Mystic.  She grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1938.  Charlotte married Albert (Bert) C. Auten on February 28, 1942 in Lancaster, Missouri.  Charlotte became a certified teacher and taught for two years in Kilduff and several more years at Four Corners School near Kellogg – Kindergarten through 8th grades.  She worked for a number of years with her older sister, Madge, sewing custom draperies for Newton Furniture.  She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and made many slippers, hot pads, mittens and afghans for her family.  She will be remembered for her positive attitude, integrity, independent spirit and love for family.  Charlotte was a member of Newton Christian Church and Common Threads at Newton Village.   

Charlotte is survived by her sons, David (Marlene) Auten and Douglas (Mary) Auten; 5 grandchildren: Adam (Jennifer) Auten, Erin (Michael) Kleppe, William (Holly) Auten, Jill (Gary) Walsh, Bart (Debbie) Auten, and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bert in 2008; sister Madge Keith; brother, Byron Brain; and sister Vera Church.
