Chris E. Smith, Sr.

   Chris, the son of Charles and Agnes (Gibson) Smith, was born December 25, 1932, in Newton.  He was a lifelong resident of Newton and he attended country school. Chris was united in marriage with Barb Eilander on May 15, 1956, in Newton. Chris served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Chris worked in construction for many years before working in maintenance at the Newton Mall until his retirement.  Chris enjoyed watching wrestling and NASCAR racing, and doing scratch tickets and word search puzzles.

   Chris was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barb in 2011; son, Rodney Smith; brothers: Wayne Smith, Lawrence Smith, Bill Smith, Hugh “Frosty” Smith, Dennis Smith, and Jim Smith; and his sisters, Illis Hodgson and Helen Cushatt.

   Those left to honor Chris’ memory include his children: Nancy (Jim) Anderson of Newton, Sonja Smith of Newton, Chris (Lorna) Smith of Sioux City, Tracy Smith of Newton, and Rob (Kathy) Smith of Des Moines; his six grandchildren: Mandy Smith, Eric (Andrea Luetje) Smith, Mike (Holly) Anderson, Brandon Smith, Greg (Keegan Brumer) Smith, and Brittany Smith; two step-grandchildren, Jason (Terry) Harker and Lissa (Chad) Fengel; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Judy (Dale) Berg of Colfax; and many nieces and nephews.
