Danny Ray Sutphin, 73, of Newton, died Monday, January 1, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service with a coffee time at the funeral home. Memorials to Amercian Legion Post 111 can be left at the funeral home.
Dan, the son of Raymond Dale and Marian Joyce (St. John) Sutphin, was born March 1, 1950, in Newton. He was graduate of Newton High School in 1968. He began working at The Maytag Company in Newton. He served in the US Air Force, during which time he met his future wife, Frances Gray. The two were united in marriage on October 14, 1974, in Newton. After his military service, Dan returned to working at Maytag for many years. He also did window and screen repair for many years. Dan was a member of the American Legion and UAW Local 997. Dan enjoyed woodworking and riding motorcycle and enjoyed participating in many toy drives on motorcycle.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Lori DePenning (fiancé, Tony Van Roekel) of Ankeny; his grandchildren, Alex Sandholm and Josh Slea (Cailyn Correlus); his brother, Tom (Nancy) Sutphin of Moberly, MO; nieces: Melinda Woody, Theresa Gobb, Milissa Ford, Penny Landen and Christina Sutphin; and nephews: Tim Gobb, Troy Sutphin, Derek Sutphin and Chris Sutphin. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Fran; daughter, Tania Sutphin; son, Michael Slea; sister, Judy Sutphin; and brothers, Duane and Randy Sutphin.
