Darlyne Mae (Wiley) Howard

Darlyne Mae Howard, 94, of Newton died on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at her home in Newton Village. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. at the time of service at the funeral home.  Memorials to the Moose Charities – designated for Moose Heart may be left at the funeral home.

Darlyne, the daughter of Florence and Mary Wilma (Reid) Wiley, was born on November 4, 1928, in Oakville. She grew up in the Morning Sun area and graduated from Morning Sun High School. Darlyne then received her teaching degree at Northwestern before taking a teaching job at Beaman High School.  While working at Beaman, she would meet her future husband, Larry Howard, at a basketball game. They were married on February 11, 1951 in Grundy Center and would make their home in Newton. In addition to raising their five children, Darlyne worked as a cook for The Cardinal and later Midtown Café. Darlyne was a charter member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton and a member of the Moose Lodge.  She enjoyed helping out at the Lodge during meals and dances.  Darlyne also loved to sew, golf, and can vegetables from the family garden.

Darlyne is survived by her husband of 72 years, Larry Howard of Newton; five children Gary (Diana May) Howard of Newton, Donna (Bob) Fisher of Johnston, Dee Rochford of Des Moines, Steve (Lelah) Howard of Longview, Washington, and Darla (Matt) Stewart of Springfield, Missouri; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Callis of Altoona.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Steven Howard; two brothers; and two sisters.
