Debra Jean Bushore, 70, of Newton died on Monday, December 22, 2025, at her home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after the service at the Alta House, 1600 E 36th St S, Newton, immediately following the service. Memorials to the PSP Foundation may be left at the funeral home or at the Alta House during visitation.
Deb, the daughter of Marion and Cordelia (Vander Horst) Slagter, was born on March 20, 1955, in Spokane, Washington. As a child her family moved to Pella, Iowa where she would graduate in the class of 1973. Deb received degrees in nursing and radiology. She worked as a nurse in Knoxville before coming to Newton and working at the Newton Clinic. On August 9, 1996, Deb was united in marriage with Barney Bushore in Key West, Florida on the fishing boat “Cha-Cha”. Deb was a certified scuba diver and enjoyed scuba diving trips. She also enjoyed flower gardening and feeding and watching birds.
Deb is survived by her husband, Barney Bushore of Newton; children, Angela Fretz, Amanda (Rob) Shoeman, Matthew Bushore, Andrew Bushore, and Marcus (Tami) Bushore; grandchild, Anika Fretz; her siblings, Diane (Dale) Beveridge, Brenda Naaktgeboren (Eddie) Klein, and Keith Slagter. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Jay Fretz; a sister, Vicki Schipul, and a brother, Doug Slagter.
