Delmar Wayne Van Wyk, 79, of Newton died on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Pella Comfort House. A celebration of Delmar’s life with a lunch will be held from 12-2 p.m., Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the American Legion Post 111. Delmar, the son of Joe and Alta (Van Dusseldorp) Van Wyk, was born on April 13, 1946, at his parent’s home in Monroe. He grew up in the Monroe and Prairie City areas where he also attended and graduated from school. Delmar then served his country in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam era from 1965-1967. When he returned from the service he moved to Newton. On September 21, 1974, Delmar was united in marriage with Diana Hill at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. At that time, Delmar was working in maintenance at the Jasper County Courthouse. Later, Delmar would work for the Newton Fire Department as a Firefight and EMT for 25 years, retiring in 2000. Even after retirement he continued to stay busy helping at the Flooring Gallery and Park Centre.
Delmar enjoyed getting together with friends and spent time at the Elks Lodge, Izaak Walton League, and the American Legion. He never knew a stranger and loved to share stories and jokes with all. Delmar was a lifelong avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs. He also had a huge heart for animals, especially Ginger, Cookie, and Lucy.
Delmar is survived by his wife, Diana Van Wyk; son, Bryan Van Wyk (Sarah) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Emma (Mitchell) Sandborn and Derrick Van Wyk; sisters, Helen Nolin, Donna (Lloyd) Steenhoek, Lois Telfer, and Leona (Wade) Charles; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard, Harlan, and Harold Van Wyk; and sisters, Doris DeHaai and Dorothy Finlow.
