Dorothy Jo (Olson) McCoy, age 88, passed away on December 25, 2024, at Hearthstone Cottages in Pella, IA, surrounded by family and under the care of exceptional and compassionate caregivers.
Dorothy was born on December 12, 1936, to Joubert and Dorothy Olson and she spent her childhood in Boone, IA, where she will be laid to rest together with her husband of 61 years, DeWayne, who preceded her in passing in 2017. DeWayne and Dorothy had four children: Wayne (Kim) McCoy, Julie (Tim) VanCleave, Mark (Amy) McCoy and Cheryl (Mark) VanHouweling. The family made their way to Newton in 1972, where they resided and were entrepreneurs, owning and operating a small business on 1st Ave, eventually called DeWayne’s. Dorothy provided bookkeeping for the business for many years and worked for American Greeting Cards following – but her main role was mother.
Dorothy was a selfless and thoughtful person who will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, hospitality and taking care of others before herself. Dorothy was the youngest of 7, and the last to make her way home. Her siblings were Delores, Beatrice (Bea), Leatrice (Lea), June, Joubert (Joe) and Marilyn. Dorothy also had 7 grandchildren, (Nicole, Nathan, Grant, Zachary, Victor, Vance and Margot), 17 greats, 1 great-great and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, her husband and her siblings, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law (Judy), her son (Mark), a grand son-in-law (Brice) and a great grandson (Henry).
A committal service for DeWayne and Dorothy will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Boone, IA, in the spring.
