Eddie "Ed" Doty Obituary

Eddie A. “Ed” Doty, 70, of Altoona, died on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. The family will greet friends with a celebration of life visitation beginning at 12 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 2021, at the Mingo Community Center.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ed’s name (checks made payable to Rita Doty) may be left at the community center or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Ed, the son of Kenneth and Marilyn (Maxwell) Doty, was born on August 2, 1950, in Des Moines. He grew up in Mingo and graduated from Mingo High School in 1969.  Ed then completed the Diesel Mechanic program at DMACC. Shortly following graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Army from June 29, 1971 to June 21, 1973. Upon his return from the service, Ed drove truck and then spent many years working at the Maytag Company.  After his retirement from Maytag, he drove truck for Centennial, retiring in 2016. Again, he returned to work this time in the Wine and Spirits department at the Altoona Hy-Vee. He met many great people and touched many lives while at Hy-Vee.

On October 25, 2013, Ed was united in marriage with Rita Harter at an 1800 circa courthouse in Pineville, Missouri.  They made their home in Altoona. Ed was a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved his Harley Davidsons. Ed was a jokester, never knew a stranger and loved telling a great story, his favorite and most told one being the time his sister, Rhonda pushed him down the basement stairs on Christmas morning. Ed loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Ed is survived by his wife, Rita Doty of Altoona; children, Ryan (Brandy) Doty of Altoona, Chad (Karen) Doty of Boise, Idaho, and Lance Doty of Ankeny; son-in-law, Neal Curtis of Baxter; grandchildren, Macy Jo Doty, Madison Ingram, Wyatt Ingram, Ariya Doty, Chloe Doty, and Stella Doty; three great-grandchildren, Serenity, Lucas, and Layne; his siblings, Jodi (John) Maher of Newton, Randy (Nhung) Doty of Mingo, Rhonda (John) Milligan of Mingo, and KC Cleveland of Hawaii; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.  He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dana Curtis; and brother, Bob Doty.
