Gary Owen Slings

Gary Owen Slings, 67, of Newton died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at his home. A celebration of his life will be held from 12-3 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Westwood Golf Course Club House. A toast will be held in Gary's honor at 2 p.m. Memorials in Gary’s name (checks to Susan Slings) may be left at the funeral home.

Gary, the son of Adrian “Ed” Hubert and Gertrude Bernice (VanZee) Slings, was born on March 12, 1958, in Newton. He was a lifelong resident of Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1976.  Gary was united in marriage with Susan Lemke on September 6, 1985, in Newton.  He worked as a Parks Mechanic for the City of Newton at Westwood Golf Course for 48 years, retiring in 2022.  During that time, he received periodic training in Horticulture through Iowa State University.  Gary loved being outdoors, fishing, golfing, and gardening.  He also loved to paint and tinker.  Gary was a jack of all trades and could tackle any project.

Gary is survived by his wife, Susan Slings of Newton; children, Joseph (Ginnie) Slings of Newton and Kyle (Ofelia) Slings of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Justice (Zach) Leonard, Brevin (Destiny) Johnston, Genessa Slings, Braleigh Slings, Adrianna Slings, Makenzie Slings, and Alex Slings; great-grandchildren, Rowan, Finnick, Wilder, and Everson; his siblings, Denny (Georgia) Slings, Nancy (Jack) Swank, and Sherry (Chuck) Stewart; and his many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents.
