Gary Joe Smith, 72, of rural Monroe, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at his home. No services are planned at this time.
Gary, the son of Lloyd Earl and Marjorie Irene (Trusler) Smith, was born on September 30, 1951 in Marshalltown. He lived his entire life in Central Iowa, mainly in the Nevada, Newton, and Monroe areas. Gary served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during Vietnam from 1969-1976. Gary was a talented mechanic and worked as the head mechanic for Northwestern Railroad for many years. He later worked at Bisom Truck Line as a mechanic and driver, retiring in 2012. Gary enjoyed hunting, building projects, woodworking, and animals. He was also a loving and devoted father and grandfather.
Gary is survived by his two children, Wesley Smith and Wendy Smith, both of Newton; step-daughter, Melissa Logue; the mother of his children Paula Smith; grandchildren, Addison Smith, Wyatt Smith, and Brooke, Jamie, and Brayden Logue; a great-grandson, Quinton; his mother, Marjorie Smith of rural Monroe; and siblings, Darrell (Pam) Smith, Linda Willer, Susan Ayers, and Lori Woody. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Earl Smith.
