Gregory Hanson, 77, of Newton, died Sunday, July 27, 2025, at his home in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Friday, August 1, at the funeral home. Memorials in Gregg's name can be left at the funeral home. Please make checks payable to Dara Hanson.
Gregory Lawrence Hanson was born July 12, 1948, to Harry and Frances Hanson and grew up on their family farm in Stoughton, Wisconsin. He was a graduate of Stoughton High School and Madison Area Technical College.
Gregg married Jacquie on December 6, 1976. Jacquie and Gregg later moved to California, where Gregg worked for the City of Chula Vista Public Works as a street and sewer manager for over a decade. In 1985, they adopted their son Michael. In the spring of 1995, Gregg and his family moved to Westby, Wisconsin, where he worked as the city utilities manager until he retired in 2014. In 2010, Jacquie passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
On New Years’ Eve of 2011, Gregg and Dara went on their first date together. A few happy years later December 27, 2014, they got married in front of family and friends. Together they enjoyed going to Iowa State football games, camping, and their Supper Club with a close group of friends. Dara was a blessing in his life and his caretaker during treatment of Gregg’s cancer.
Gregg died at the age of 77 on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at his home after a long-fought battle with prostate cancer and dementia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacquie and his parents.
Gregg is survived by his wife, Dara Hanson of Newton; son, Michael (Jenna) Hanson; his grandson, Austin; his stepchildren: James (Dawn) Carlock of Newton, Sara (Matt) Koon of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Sean (Erica) Carlock of Newton; eight step grandchildren; his brother, Gary; and will be remembered by many other relatives and friends.
