Harriet, the daughter of Dr. James H. Clements and Helen R. (Reckler) Clements, was born November 16, 1953, in Grinnell. She graduated from Grinnell High School and then attended Drake University from 1972 to 1976, where she majored in Fine Arts. During her sophomore year at Drake, Harriet studied abroad in Florence, Italy, where she made friendships that lasted her lifetime. After graduating from Drake, she continued her studies at Philadelphia College of Art, with an emphasis on Fabric Design. Harriet was united in marriage with Marcus Kainz on August 30, 1978, in Des Moines. Harriet and Marcus were inseparable and shared a lifetime of devotion. They especially enjoyed collaborating on mixed media art pieces—that they exhibited and sold at Arts and Craft shows. They always shared a special bond with their feline companions. Harriet worked for Wellmark for 24 years before her retirement in 2007.
Those left to honor Harriet’s memory include her brother, Jim Clements of Newton; 7 nieces and nephews; and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marcus Kainz; sister, Mary Halstead; and brother, Frank Clements.
