Helen M. Halter, 93, of Newton died on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at Iowa River Hospice of Marshalltown. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Masks will be required and social distancing measures will be strictly enforced. Memorials to the First Christian Church or in Helen’s name (checks made payable to Judy Conn) may be left at the funeral home.
Helen, the daughter of Roy J. and Iva (Kiser) Doran, was born on February 14, 1927 in Felton, Minnesota. She grew up in Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High School. On May 31, 1947, Helen was united in marriage with Harold Halter in Des Moines. They made their home in Baxter and later in Newton. Helen was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Helen enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. She also liked canning items grown in her garden.
Helen is survived by her grandson, Chad Halter of Newton; daughter-in-law, Judy (Jeff) Conn of Newton; sisters-in-law, Shirley Brown, Helen I. Halter, and Nancy Doran; many nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews, including Matthew Barber and Lindsey Sirdoreus. She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Iva and Howard Halverson; father, Roy Doran; husband, Harold Halter; son, Bruce Halter; grandson, Scott Halter; brother, Marvin Doran; and two sisters, Verneal Baker and Phyllis Green.
