Horal “Bud” Alfred Doland, 80, of Newton, died on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Harvest Acres Nursing & Rehab in Keota. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from the end of the service until 7 p.m. Memorials to the Newton YMCA may be left at the funeral home.
Bud, the son of Orville and Laverne (Beebe) Doland, was born on November 1, 1945, in Des Moines. He grew up in Des Moines and later worked at Firestone. When Bud began his career at the Maytag Company, he moved to Newton where he would raise his family.
In 1992, he retired from the Maytag Company but continued to work for several more years mowing for Newton Parks and Recreation.
Bud was a member of the UAW Local 997. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Celtics, Bears, Yankees, Cubs, and Iowa Hawkeyes. No matter which team he was supporting, he always did it with a Pepsi in his hand. In addition to playing church league softball for years, he also loved coaching his kids in all of their activities. Bud was an excellent roller skater and passed that skill on to his children. He also liked to camp, fish, mow, and listen to Johnny Cash.
Bud is survived by his children, Kelly (Jeff) Jolley, Jason Doland, and Amanda (Mike) Butler, all of Newton; grandchildren, Shad Jolley, Jessica (Zach) Sudbrock, Sarah Heikkila, Danielle Heikkila, Savannah Doland, Chloe Butler, Kya Butler, and Kiara Butler; and his five great-grandchildren, Clarke, Blake, Dawson, Aubrey, and James. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Renae Heikkila; and siblings, Bobbi, Marie, Jolene, and Joe.
