Jake Ross Flanagan, 100, of Newton, formerly of Monroe, died on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Park Centre. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2025, at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Jake, the son of Richard W. and Martha Deloma (Rouse) Flanagan, was born on May 30, 1924, in Pennville, Missouri. He grew up in Missouri before moving to Iowa in 1953. On July 2, 1955, Jake was united in marriage with Doris E. Stepleton in Newton. After a few years, they made their home in Monroe. Jake worked for over 36 years in Tool Service at the Maytag Company, retiring in the late 1980’s. In 2007, Jake and Doris moved back to Newton. He enjoyed woodworking and making things; working in his garden and yard; and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jake is survived by his wife, Doris Flanagan; children, Vickie (Paul) White of Kellogg, Mike (Denise) Flanagan of Bondurant, Marty (Mary Peterson) Flanagan of Des Moines, Linda Gordan of Glenwood, Judy (Mark) Curtis-Nelson of Omaha, and Terry Flanagan of Las Vegas, Nevada; his 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Rose (Ralph) Ravenscraft and Delores Tabor, both of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald Flanagan; and three sisters, Vita Jean Cleous, Betty Smith, and Ruth Herndon.
