Joan, the daughter of Robert and Tunnie (Onstank) Nichols, was born on December 8, 1933 at home in Knoxville. She grew up in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville High School. On September 5, 1952, Joan was united in marriage with Archie Carson in Knoxville. They made their home on the Carson family century farm, south of Newton. Joan loved farming and worked hard to take care of the animals on the farm. She also worked as a CNA in the OB department at Skiff Medical Center for 22 years, retiring in 1998. Joan was an active member of Community Heights Alliance Church and had taught Sunday School for many years. She also was a member of the Palo Alto Grange. Joan enjoyed playing cards and going on drives with friends, sometimes finding every back road between home and their destination.
Joan is survived by her grandchildren, Greg (Jennifer) Carson of Villa Rica, Georgia and Matt (Jackie) Carson of Newton; great-grandchildren, Bridget (Brandon) Shoemaker, Devin, Indy, Isabella, and Gracie Carson and Halle, Bree, and Cole Carson; her great-great-grandchildren, Mila and Bradley Shoemaker; son-in-law, Forrest Grabau of Boone; daughter-in-law, Vickie (George) Carson-Liston of Newton; her brother, Tom (Swaney) Nichols of Tracy; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; three children, Ron Carson, Steve Carson, and Patricia Grabau; and three sisters, Louise Work, Pat Buttrey; and Bonnie Grunhaupt.
