Joan Henderson Obituary

Joan E. (Baker) Henderson, 88, of Newton died on Friday, February 3, 2023, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 26, 2023, at Newton Union Cemetery.  The family will greet friends after the service at the Kellogg American Legion. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Joan, the daughter of Loris Arthur and Florence Helene (Toney) Baker, was born on March 2, 1934, in Leon. As a child, she moved to Newton with her family. Joan graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1952. She was united in marriage with Joseph Henderson on May 29, 1952 at the First Christian Church in Newton. They were blessed with two daughters Jan and Marcia. Joan and Joe were married 68 years before Joe’s passing in 2020. Joan was employed at Rexall Drug Store, Newton Manufacturing, Capital Theater, Vernon Company, and People’s Natural Gas.  She enjoyed camping, traveling, and the 17 winters that were spent in Texas. 

Joan is survived by her two daughters, Jan Tedrow of Kellogg and Marcia Winningham (Randall Smith) of Kellogg; grandchildren, Andrew (Mollie) Winningham, Kalie (Keith) Braden, Madison Morris, and Angela Henderson; her great-grandchildren, Kristen Henderson (Kyle Doerring), Emily Henderson (Derek Hurford), Jay McGuire, Jerrica McGuire, Braylyn Winningham, and Autumn Engle; and great-great-grandchildren, Liam Brummer and Jorydn Hurford. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Henderson; and brother, Richard (Leota “Masie”) Baker.
