Joanne (LaFavre) Pennock, 90, of Des Moines, formerly of Newton, died on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Urbandale Healthcare Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2024, at the Des Moines Seventh-day Adventist Church. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials to the Des Moines Adventist School may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.
Joanne was born to Eugene and Christine Marie (Samson) Rector on January 22, 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota. As a young child, she moved to Newton, Iowa with her family. By the age of 12, Joanne changed her name to LaFavre to reflect the love she had for her step-father, Charles LaFavre. Joanne was a 1952 graduate of Newton High School. On June 6, 1953, she was united in marriage with Wayne Pennock in Newton. Joanne worked at the Maytag Company before her children were born. Later, she worked for 20 years as the Church Secretary at the First Lutheran Church and then for 20 years as an Administrative Assistant for the State of Iowa Department of Human Services, retiring in 2009. Joanne was a long-time member of the Des Moines Seventh-day Adventist Church. She enjoyed traveling, stained glass, genealogy, flower gardening, and cooking.
Joanne is survived by her three children, Debra Worrell of Omaha, Nebraska, David (Heidi) Pennock of Camarillo, California, and Tim (Andrea) Pennock of Des Moines; grandchildren, Daniel Worrell, Michael Worrell, Paul (Krystle Mullin) Worrell, Julie (Abraham) Manyout, Ruth Worrell, Joseph Pennock, Grace Pennock, Hannah Pennock, Kendra (Justin) Flammger, Cassandra (Jarred) Bridges, and Josh Robison; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Daniel, Will, and Uludo Manyout, Willow Worrell, Brandon, McKenzie, and Henry Bridges, Kynlee Flammger, and Connor Blanchard; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie LaFavre; husband, Wayne Pennock; her son-in-law, Fred Worrell; step-grandson, Dustin Blanchard; and her siblings, Beverly Marker and Dennis LaFavre.
