Joe Behrens Obituary

Joe Harold Behrens, 82, of Newton died on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial of his ashes will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 26, at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials in Joe’s name (checks made payable to Joyce Behrens) may be left at the funeral home.

Joe, the son of Harold and Katheryn (Steinberger) Behrens, was born on January 31, 1940 in Knoxville. As a child, he moved to Newton and later graduated from Newton High School.  While in high school, Joe worked for Johnson Funeral Home.  On November 6, 1976, Joe was united in marriage with Joyce Halter in Newton.  He worked for Jasper County in the driver’s license office and also as a deputy sheriff.  Joe later worked for the Maytag Company for many years as a security guard, retiring in the early 2000’s.

Joe and Joyce loved animals of all shapes and sizes.  In addition to their Maltese puppies, they also had a long list of exotic animals. Through the years, Joe and Joyce loved to go dancing.  They also enjoyed traveling, although Joe would many times get them into quite the “off the beaten path” adventures.

Joe is survived by his wife, Joyce Behrens of Newton; son, Michael (Melinda) Behrens of Missouri; his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Julie, Kylie and David Behrens; brother, Jack (Randa) Behrens of Chicago; and his nephews and niece, Kirk, Scott, Brian, and Kay.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jane Tuffin; and a brother, Johnny Behrens, in infancy.
