John Michael Burns, 71, of Newton, formerly of Mingo, died on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation in Des Moines. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice may be left at the funeral home.
John, the son of Ralph and Ardith (Solinger) Burns, was born on June 22, 1954. He grew up in Mingo and graduated from Mingo High School in 1973. He lived in Mingo for a number of years after and served on the Volunteer Fire Department. In 1995, John moved to Newton. He worked for many years for the Jasper County Highway Department, retiring in 2019. John enjoyed watching TV and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
John is survived by his children; step-children; grandchildren; and siblings, Joyce (Larry) Pohlman, Terry (Bridget) Burns, and Tom (Bert) Burns and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy Burns; and a sister, Pam Pettis.
