Johnny Ponsetto

   Johnny L. Ponsetto, 89, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Mercy Des Moines with family by his side. He was born May 21, 1936, in Centerville, IA to Blanche and Roy Ponsetto.

   Johnny grew up in Jerome, IA and graduated from Seymour High School. In 1966, Johnny attended the Iowa State Patrol Academy and became a State Trooper. He was assigned to Jasper County (Newton), where he served for 30 years. In 1996, Johnny retired from the Iowa State Patrol and for the next five years served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. In 2001, he became a civil processor for the Sheriff’s office, a position he held for 19 years, retiring once again in 2020. Johnny dedicated 54 years to public service, where his true calling was to serve others.

   Family was important to Johnny. He enjoyed a simple chat over coffee or a holiday get together. Johnny liked catching up on what everyone was doing, teasing the grandkids and teaching the family dogs new tricks.

   Johnny’s passion was bowhunting. He loved the outdoors and the beauty it brought. He cherished the excitement of the hunt, whether it be a wise old whitetail, a clever turkey or discreet black bear. Johnny respected the wildlife and the challenge it brought.

   Johnny is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucy; son, Steve (Melissa); granddaughters, Lindsay (Aron) and Mindy (Andy); and five great-grandchildren, Nolan, Dillyn, Reid, Breck and Jett.

Preceding Johnny in death were his parents; brothers, Joey and Danny; and sister, Jacki Ann.

   A celebration of life will be held at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 1115 E. 19th St. N. Newton, IA on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at 10:30am. Following the service, a visitation with family will take place, along with a luncheon. A private burial service will be held at a later date.

   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Johnny’s name to the Moose Lodge, Newton, IA.
