Jon Ernest Woody, 86, of Newton went to his heavenly home on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 21, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials to the Newton Church of the Way may be left at the funeral home.
Jon, the son of Mark and Thelma (Caulkins) Woody, was born on October 7, 1937 at his family’s home in rural Monroe. He grew up in rural Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School in 1956. Jon was united in marriage with Carolyn Sparks on June 1, 1956 in Reasnor. They made their home in several places around Jasper County until moving into Newton in 1977. Jon worked as a machinist for over 36 years at several companies around the area including Thomberts, Parsons, Fisher Control, and Winpower before retiring from the Maytag Company in 1999. After retirement, Jon worked part-time at Pyramid Plastics. For many years, Jon and Carolyn also owned and operated Woody’s Lawn Care.
Jon was a member of the Newton Church of the Way. Music was always a large part of his life from playing in the marching band and singing in a quartet during high school, to singing at weddings and funerals, and later in life sharing the love of music with his family. He also enjoyed camping, woodworking, and carpentry.
Jon is survived by his wife, Carolyn Woody of Newton; children, Joni Woody of Newton, Lisa (Duane) Blommers of Newton, and Don (Angie) Woody of Lenexa, Kansas; grandchildren, Amie (Eric) Johnson, Amber (Troy) McGruder, Cory Blommers, Stephen Woody (Hannah), and Jered Woody (Brie); great-grandchildren, Kyndra Johnson, Cassie Johnson, Isaac Johnson, Emma McGruder, Lucas McGruder, Camdyn Blommers, and Alma Woody; sister-in-law, Virginia Woody of Monroe; and close family friend and Camdyn’s mom, Ashton Hicks. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven Woody; and his siblings, Dean Woody and Beverly Sheeler.
