Joseph “Joe” David Slings, 48, of Newton died on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A celebration of his life will be held from1-4 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Cardinal Lanes. A toast to Joe will take place at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joe’s name (checks payable to Ginnie) may be left at the bowling alley the day of the celebration or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Joe, the son of Gary and Susan (Lemke) Slings, was born on January 7, 1978, in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1996. On July 25, 1999, Joe was united in marriage with Ginnie Johnston in Baxter. They lived in both Baxter and Newton while raising their family. Joe had worked for Moehl Millwork for over 25 years, most recently as an Outside Sales Representative. He was a lifelong bowler and member of USBC. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, mushroom hunting, and woodworking. Joe and Ginnie loved their yearly trips to Florida.
Joe is survived by his wife, Ginnie Slings; children, Justice (Zach) Leonard, Brevin (Destiny) Johnston, Genessa Slings, and Braleigh Slings; grandchildren, Rowan, Finnick, Wilder, and Everson; his mother, Sue Slings; maternal grandmother, Louise Lippman; and his brother, Kyle (Ofelia) Slings. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, D.J. and Casey Johnston; sisters-in-law, Niki (Jason) Ross and Kelley Johnston; nieces and nephews, Adrianna Slings, Makenzie Slings, Alex Slings, Miranda (Tim) Jenner, Parker (Hanna) Colvin, and Amaya Johnston; and great nieces and nephew, Blake, Cayne, and Lily. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Slings; paternal grandparents, Adrian and Gertrude Slings; and nephew, Shayden Colvin.
